1. Forget + to-infinitive (forget that somebody is/was supposed to do something): quên mất phải làm gì
• I had to phone the office but I forgot to do it.
Forget + gerund (forget a past event): quên mất mình đã làm gì trong quá khứ
I’ve never forget learning to drive.

2. Remember + to-infinitive (=remember that somebody is/was supposed to do something): nhớ phải làm gì
Remember + gerund (remember a past event): nhớ là mình đã làm gì trong quá khứ
I remember locking the door.

3. Regret + to-infinitive (=be sorry for something you are doing): lấy làm tiếc vì phải làm gì
We regret to say that your heater can’t be repaired.
Regret + gerund (=be spry because of something that happened in the past):
I regret not buying that photocopier.

4. Stop + to-infinitive (pause temporarily): dừng lại để làm việc gì đó khác
We stopped to look at the view.
Stop + gerund (end an action): dừng việc gì lại
They stopped making noise

5. Try + to-infinitive (=do somebody’s best; make an effort + to-infinitive): cố gắng làm gì
I tried to warn him, but it was too late.
Try + gerund: thử làm gì
Have you ever tried windsurfing? It is great!

6. Mean + to-infinitive: định làm gì
She meant to give him a message, but she forgot.
Mean + gerund (=involve): bao hàm việc gì, nghĩa là cần có việc gì
Keeping fit means taking exercise every day. (việc giữ gìn sức khỏe nghĩa là phải tập thể dục hàng ngày)

7. Be sorry + to-infinitive (=regret + to-infinitive): lấy làm tiếc phải làm gì
We are sorry to tell you that you have failed.
Be sorry for + gerund (=apologize for + gerund): xin lỗi vì đã làm gì
He is sorry for not returning the record to them.

8. Be afraid + to-infinitive (be too frightened to do something): sợ quá không dám làm gì
The old are often afraid to cross crowded streets.
Be afraid of + gerund: sợ làm gì
My children are afraid of going out at night.
